Summary of the Story
Jesus had an interesting story, when he was twelve years old he traveled with Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival. Meanwhile, back in Jerusalem, Jesus broke the news to his parents: He had stayed home after the festivities were over and before you read on for what happens next note how Andrew Peterson sings it in his lovely song. His parents left thinking he was travelling with family and friends. They traveled for a whole day, then, discovering that He was not with them they returned to Jerusalem in quest of Him.
And on the third day they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them and asking them questions; And all that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers. In Luke 2:49 He responded to Mary, “Why did you seek me? Did you not know I must be about my father’s business?” His parents did not understand His words, but Jesus went home with them; He obeyed them and grew in wisdom, maturity, and favor with God and people.
Introduction
It was a strange and marvelous occurrence during the early days of the earthly ministry of Jesus when this child showed such wisdom and understanding. Among other wonderful things this part of the New Testament account tells us is that God sets out from childhood the training of his elect servants. By this incident, it is evident that the child is transformed from being merely a listener to also becoming a questioner, an answerer, and one who understands some of God’s mystical mysteries.

The distance was great, but the conviction of the hearts of the people was firm in their spirits. Temple of the Holy of Holies
When Jesus returned to Jerusalem with his family, the atmosphere at the temple was holy, peaceful, and prayerful. It was not only a place where knowledge and instruction were given regarding God’s Word; the temple was also a place of worship. Scribes, wise men, scholars, and even common folk mingled together to acquire knowledge about God and the resurrection.
The temple was a building not simply made of stone and mortar, but of spiritual truth and a home of worship. Here one would be most inclined to reach God the Father. Such an atmosphere greatly favored the spiritual maturation of Jesus.
Living in the temple
Later that day when the worship service concludes, Mary and Joseph return home to Nazareth, but not with Jesus. He stays behind in Jerusalem and makes his way toward the temple. In those times, this concept of him not accompanying them is difficult to grasp.
Mary and Joseph have lost him. They don’t know what he has done; they just imagine that he might have taken refuge with some relative or gone off to visit some relative elsewhere. The search for Mary and Joseph

The days and experiences for Mary and Joseph during this search for Jesus are agonizing, especially for a loving mother and father who have a responsibility over their child; it is of no help to any loving couple not knowing or having no information of their own flesh and blood.
Three days of restlessness
For him, those three days were just the passing of time, not only to make him happy but also to put his poor anxious heart to a challenge. Time was also flying, and with it the anxiety. He kept searching for her in every possible corner & keeping track of all updates.
Those three days may also teach us that it may take time to understand what God wants to convey. What feels like a problem at the present time may become a source of knowledge & security later.
Meeting at the temple
Eventually, they see Jesus in the temple, and he is sitting between the religious teachers. He hears and questions the discussions. His peace and confident poise surprised everyone as they witnessed his insight.
Mary then wonders how he has found himself at the temple in the first place, a lament mixed not only with concern but also with the maternal distress that can sometimes overwhelm her son. We get to see in these scenes a clever and quick-witted child beyond his tender years.
