Summary of the Story
On Mount Carmel, the prophet Elijah brought together the prophets of Baal to see who the true God was. Both sides prepared the altar, but no one was permitted to ignite the fire here. They prayed from morning to noon for Baal [the god of rain], but nothing happened. 1 Kings 18:31 And Elijah took twelve stones, according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, unto whom the word of God came, saying, Israel shall be thy name.
Introduction
An inspiring and touching account of faith, bravery, perseverance, and God’s unstoppable power is the Old Testament accounts of the prophet Elijah. Then as the Israelites slowly rejected the one true God and came to love the false god Baal, God sent Elijah with a Word. It was not simply a miracle — it was the dramatic uncovering of all that distinguishes truth from falsehood, faith from error, and the real kingdom of God. Enemy of Israel
The children of Israel were once earnest for God; later, many felt weak spiritually. For these reasons, they resumed forgetting the commandments of God and, with the influence of foreign peoples, went after idols. They built temples and offered sacrifices, created their false god, and worshiped him. This led many people to stop worshipping God and start worshipping Baal.
Elijah had been able to see that the community was breaking at the seams but not only from the top down. The citizens were conflicted between good and bad. Their hearts were estranged from God, and they had turned to the world and idolatry. God could not accept the situation, and it was Elijah that He appointed to confront the nation and turn it back to God.
Jezebel was more than a wife of a king; she came to be the very power behind the religion that upheld and fortified Baal worship. Already you have seen how she altered the environment of Israel so drastically that only false gods were honored and true prophets silenced. She sent errors into the dwellings, markets & even places of worship.
Baal became an attractive deity because Baal was associated with rain, greenery, and the blooming and fruitfulness of crops. But the real truth was that only God can be the lord of earth, sky, rain, and all things. Elijah was sent to bring this false story to light.
Elijah’s Message
He called only on the power of God, not by human means nor partisanship. This was a testament to the definition of his faith and divine courage.
Animals got thirsty, and homes became colorless and stir-crazy. Formerly welcome to the children, those who saw here became quiet. Indeed, God used this time to ensure that Elijah was protected. These events witness that God is aware of his devoted servants. They also remind us that though we go through peril in the world, God makes a way for his servant.
God’s protection
God was proven faithful through the worst times for Elijah in the drought. He (God) made a place for him in every rough situation. He at some points got solace from his solitude; sometimes he had food supplied, and sometimes he was helped by people in ways that he did not expect. This experience strengthened his faith. God never leaves us in the dark. This story is an example of that. He comes with assistance and mercy in His own time. Trusting in Him will open the doors of His mercy to salvage your situation, even at the most desperate times.
Experience Elijah’s loneliness.
To some extent, we can experience Elijah’s loneliness and test his faith. Though Elijah appeared to stand alone, he never stood alone because God was with him. There was a man, a prophet of the Lord in the days of kings, whose folks had gone astray, yet Elijah never faltered in his high regard for faith even when those people were lost and the king was against him. His isolation was the type of isolation that drew him near to God, rather than away from Him.
This test becomes a lesson for all believers. It can all be a lonely road sometimes, to speak the truth and stand by it until that day and with God remain faithful. But he who walks with God is never alone. The life of his prophet Elijah teaches a difficult journey of faith but is blessed and prosperous in its outcome.
Prophets of Baal
For three years, God instructed Elijah to appear before Ahab. It was then a transformative and unprecedented turn. He wanted them to set their eyes on who the true God is. The community had been challenged to prepare two sacrifices, one from the prophets of Baal and one from Elijah. If the fire were accepted, then the deity from whom it came would be acknowledged as the powerful god. This was not merely a competition but a heavenly test to validate the truth.
Being a nation
A massive crowd was gathered on Mount Carmel. The people were nervous. Everyone was watching whose prayer would be granted. Some were silent, some fearful, and some were hoping for a different result. But it wasn’t just some miracle waiting to happen; in fact, it was a moment of judging not just the hearts of the people.
Examples include the work of the prophet Baal.
The prophets of Baal made their sacrifice and called from the morning until the evening. They prayed out loud, they shrieked, and they wept and called upon their God. They tried with all their strength, but their voices remained an exercise in the sound of no sound.
But there was no answer. There was no sound, nor any miracle. All their efforts proved futile. This shows how false gods cannot hear, see, or help. A god who does not have life cannot listen to the call of any man.
Elijah’s Preparation
Demanded from the people that they should pour water thereon. Elijah was demonstrating that what would happen shortly was by no human arts or crafts, nor deception, illusion, or sorcery.

People nowadays are more susceptible to putting their trust in money, success, and worldly gain rather than God. As God said to Elijah, so also God says to believers: Stand for truth; leave the rest with Me. You are empowered by prayer and obedience in utter dependence on God. No matter how unlikely, there is still a way for God to work in this mess to His glory.
Elijah’s Prayer
Elijah realized God would answer for the honor of His name. And when He prayed, it was not praise for himself but for the glory of God to be revealed. This was taught through this prayer, where pure intention born in a sincere heart never fails to reach God.
Fire from the sky
It came to pass, as soon as he made an end of praying, that the fire of the most high fell. It consumed the sacrifice. It was such an impressive sight that everyone watched, astonished.
Nobody could offer any other rationale for this miracle. It was powered by God. And in an instant, everyone knew that Elijah was true and God was the real God. When fire was not only lighting a sacrifice but also an event that turned the hearts of the people.
Responsibility after the miracle
They pondered over the miracle, which not only produced an instant shift in perception but also a moment of awe-filled gratitude. Then they had to decide who would follow.
God? It reminds us that just witnessing a miracle is not sufficient reasoning. Action is also necessary. When God shows His might, then it is upon mankind to repent and reform their actions and embrace the truth.
The return of rain
Once again, Elijah prayed after the event up on Mount Carmel. Later on a little cloud came into the sky and increased to a big cloud. The reason for this cloud was that God had revealed His mercy. This marked an indication of the mercy and forgiveness of God that had come down on Qom.
