Summary of the Story
John the Baptist beheaded (Matthew) When Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. But He had multitudes that came out after Him to hear the things he taught and see the miracles. But when Jesus saw the multitude, he was moved with compassion for them and healed their sickness. But when it was evening, his disciples came to him, saying, This is a desert place, and the time is now past; send the multitude away so that they may go into the villages and buy themselves victims.
Instead, Jesus received five loaves of bread and two fish from a boy. He gave thanks, blessed the food and instructed the disciples to distribute it. By some miracle, over five thousand men (and women and children), ate until they could eat no more. And when they were filled, he said to his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost. (John 6:12) It is recorded that a total of twelve baskets were collected by the disciples, highlighting God’s blessing and abundance coming through Jesus in action.

The apostle Andrew brought this to Jesus, and said, “This is not enough for so many people.” Humanly speaking, this certainly makes sense, since how could five loaves and two fish suffice for thousands of people?
